Okay, I promised an update when I had some news about my medical condition. So here it is.

I saw the neurosurgeon today. He has recommended me for surgery within the month of January, that is to say, within the next three weeks. (I'm 'on call'!)

Expected stay in hospital: 2 - 3 days.

Length of time that I might need help at home: two or three days.

Length of time wearing a neck brace (during the day) and not driving a car: approximately six weeks.

Length of time until healing is as complete as it is going to be: up to 1 year.

Just a word to those who have only known me as 'Marie' (it pleases me that there are so many of you). During my stay in hospital and perhaps for the two or three days after I arrive home, I will be presenting as 'George'. I hope this is not going to be a problem for anyone (besides me). I have thought long and hard about this decision and do not view it as a 'concession' to anyone or any thing except my own comfort, convenience and laziness. I mention this because I remember how important visitors were to me two years ago, when I was laid up the last time. I would like to have visitors this time as well. I just wanted them to be prepared.
